MY ROLE

I worked on this project as a Product design lead.

Main areas of responsibility:

  • Research (Understanding the problem, collecting data, and conducting surveys).
  • Design (Creating mid and high fidelity screens).
  • Interactive prototyping (Designing the basic flow and interactions).
  • UX Writing (Writing the copy including messages and labels).
  • Handing off the final design to the developers.

PROJECT SUMMARY

After releasing the Breakout Teams feature, we got great results but we found that only 50% of students are participating and interacting with their teammates. So, we decided to apply some of the gamification techniques and introduce new ways of interactions between students. With a few tweaks, we could achieve a significantly high student engagement specially after adding the high-five interaction in the breakout design.

#1 The Challenge / Problem

Surprisingly, data showed that only 50% of students were active with their teammates during the breakout discussion. (An active student is the student who use the mic at least one time in the session to discuss with his teammates). Our goal from this project was to raise the engagement percentage to 70% through adding the gamification features.

The problem was in the absence of an interactive feature that students can use to interact and express their encouragement with their teammates. So, it is not only about designing the feature to be effective, but also making sure that it is both motivational and enjoyable. To solve this issue, we worked on enhancing the gamified experience by adding the fun element to keep their classes and lessons interested to the students. In this project, we created a game-based environment where students feel encouraged to interact with their teammates.

The direct objectives we targeted in this project are:
1) To help top students get recognition and appreciation when they help their teammates.
2) Motivate other silent students to engage with their teammates to get recognized as well.

#2 The Solution

We relied on gamification to make the interaction more fun and motivational for students. So, we started adding elements like fun visuals and animation to the designs.

The main question was: what is the best animation to use to allow the students to interact? The high-five animation was the right answer. High Five is a great way to express gratitude. It is used when someone wants to congratulate, express solidarity with another person, or greet someone with a high-five. Through this gamification based solution, students can high-five 🙏🏼 their teammates during a breakout.

This feature aimed at allowing students to use the high-five animation to simply say "thanks for helping" and participate in the team. Also, pushing silent students to interact and start discussion with teammates was a fundamental goal of this project.

How it work?

  • The student (sender of the gesture) taps on his teammate avatar (the receiver) and selects High-five to send.
  • Each student has high-five counter where the total number of high-five interactions is shown beside his name.
  • Each student can send one high-five interaction only per question to each teammate.
  • The student can’t send high-five for himself 😅 (we added a funny feedback message here).

#3 The Results

The students loved this feature a lot! They even now request from each other to send high-five when they help their teammates or select the right answer 😅.

We are still observing this feature and introducing other features to increase the participation rate and engagement between the students.

Thanks for reaching this point, I really appreciate it! I would like to hear a feedback from you
